Allahabad was founded by Akbar in 1575. Allahabad is also known as Prayag, and it means "place of offerings". It is revered by the Hindus, as the Triveni Sangam, the confluence of three rivers Ganga, Yamuna and Saraswati is situated here. Every 12 years, a Kumbh Mela organized here where millions of pilgrims take a plunge at the Sangam. Allahabad has several historic monuments and many Victorian and Georgian buildings made in synthesis with Indian architectural traditions.

The fort was earlier built by King Ashoka and later repaired in the 16th century by Mughal Emperor Akbar. It was one of the largest forts built by Akbar. The fort has high towers that flank three galleries. The design, craftsmanship and the construction of the temple is a reflection of Mughal architecture and a sight to behold. During your visit to the fort, you can look at the Ashoka Pillar. It is 10 metres tall and carved out of sandstone with inscriptions from 232 BC.

The home of the Nehru family, the Anand Bhawan now holds memorabilia of the Nehru-Gandhi family and is one of the great museums of India. It is house to many books, pictures and personal effects belonging to the Nehru family. It is the place where plans regarding the struggle of freedom against the British were made. The house has beautiful gardens and provides an exciting glimpse of the past.
The Hanuman Temple

Hanuman temple is a great tourist attraction with religious fervour. The temple situated near the Allahabad Fort is unique because it is the only temple with a huge idol of Lord Hanuman in a lying stance a couple of feet below the ground. When river Ganga is in high spate, the temple gets submerged. People believe that the river Ganga offers her obeisance’s to Lord Hanuman.

A massive garden with an alluring charm due to its greenery and magnificent tombs, Khusro Bagh is one of the best places in Allahabad where you can go together with your family. The walled garden houses three mausoleums, ones of Shah Begum, Prince Khusrau Mirza and Sultan Nithar Begam. Shah Begum was the first wife of Mughal Emperor Jahangir and mother of Prince Khusrau and Princess Nithar. These Khusro Bagh was built by Jahangir and are an excellent display of Mughal architecture. It is a great picnic spot with lot of fascinating points to capture great memories and bring back home!

Patalpuri Temple is one of the oldest temples in India which was made in the Vedic period. It is located in the Allahabad Fort and is a very important holy place in Allahabad. It is believed that the temple was visited by Lord Rama and Prahalad Maharaj. There is an undying Banyan tree or the ‘Akshayavat’ near the temple which the people believe will live even if the world gets devastated. Take a permit from Allahabad Tourist Office or the Ordinance Depot to visit the Patalpuri Temple and the Akshayavat.
