Digha

A very popular weekend gateway, Digha is one of the widest beaches all over the world. This town offers a delightful experience to the visitors through its magnificent beaches, elegant religious temples and high-tech research centers and exquisite museums. It is also known as the ‘Brighton of the East’ for its gorgeous natural beauty. During the earlier periods, its name was ‘Beerkul’. Digha beach has an untouched beauty surrounded by beautiful Casuarinas trees. Its beaches are shallow sand beaches, with low gradient. Thousands of tourists come here to explore its charming beauty and get rid from the city hustle and bustle. Some of the delicious sea foods like Tiger prawns, Bhetki, Rohu, Pomfret and Fried Fish are specialty of this place. Vegetarians too have a good deal of options here such as Continental cuisine. At the time of the Sunrise and the Sunset, the reflection of the sunlight through the salty water creates a fantastic scene. Come and explore the beauty of Digha, if you just want to relax at the sun- kissed beaches.

Location: It is located in South-West of Calcutta

Climate: Summers are quite hot, while winters are quite cold.

Carry cotton clothes for summers visit and plenty of warm clothes for winter visit.

Places of Interest

New Digha Beach

Location:  2 kms from the city centre Digha

Best time to visit: Avoid the beach after 9 p.m. because of unsocial elements lurking around.

New Digha Beach is a beautiful man-made beach. Old Digha Beach has lots of crowd and is dangerous at the time of high tides. However, the new beach is well-maintained, greater in size and less populated. It is also safe for swimming and sunbathing. You can also enjoy horse riding, playing volleyball on the beach and boating. You can also buy beautiful Sea Shell adornments and exclusive cottage crafts of various attractive designs. The latest attraction of New Digha is the Science Centre, established by the National Council of Science Museums.

MARC (Marine Aquarium and Research Centre)

Location: State Highway 57, Digha, Purba Medinipur, West Bengal

Timings:  All working days from 9.30 a.m. – 6.00 p.m.

MARC was founded in the year 1989 during the Seventh Five Year Plan. There are around 8 water tanks and 24 marine tanks with latest equipments here such as light, water supply system and air supply system. The prime aim behind the centre is to demonstrate the latest research and to familiarize the people with bio-diversity. It is the largest aquarium in the country. Hundreds of visitors come here to view the exotic aquarium every day. It also offers a wonderful place for the kids with its Skeleton company during bicycle racing, a planetarium resembling an Eskimo’s Igloo and Jurassic Age Park, all of which are very interesting. Various species like sea sharks, anemones, horse shoe crabs, butterfly fishes, rays, lobsters and sea snakes can be spotted here.

Amravati Park

Location: New Digha, West Bengal

Timings: Open all days of the week from 7:30 a.m. - 7:30 p.m.

Amravati Park is a beautiful small park in Digha. At the centre of this park, there is the ecstatic Amravati Lake. Boating in this lake is one of the most popular things to do in Digha. Besides the lake, Deepak Mitra's snake farm is another tourist attraction spot. In this park, there is a kid zone with various interesting activities like merry-go-round, swings and sea saw etc. It is a perfect destination for fun lovers, nature enthusiasts and photo fanatics. This place is very relaxing and charming and you will relish the time spent here.

Chandeshwar Temple

Location: 8 kms from Digha

Best time to visit: September to march

Chandreshwar Temple is located in Orissa near Digha. This is a century old temple of Lord Shiva. You will be intrigued by the Shivalinga here, which is located under the ground. Nobody can see it, but devotees can feel the presence of the divine power through a water bubble that is originated from the ground.  A large number of tourists and devotees visit here every year, especially on Maha Vishnu Sakranti and Ganjan Mela. On the first month of Oriya calendar, a huge annual fair is organized here. Over half million people gather in this temple during various festivals. No doubt, it is an ideal place to visit which you will never forget.

Udaipur Beach

Location: 2 kms West from Digha

Best time to visit:  October– March

Udaipur Beach is an unexplored beach, with its one part in West Bengal and the other in Orissa. The lush green area, the outstanding Casuarina climate and the beautiful hills of Eastern Ghats add a charisma in the beauty of this beach. There is a close-by delta, where the great Subarnarekha converges into the Bay of Bengal. Udaipur beach is perfect for the visitors who are looking for a peaceful and calm beach atmosphere. The shoreline has deserted extends of seashore, where you can take a plunge in the water, stroll along or simply lease a bike to roam around.
