Gwalior, Madhya Pradesh

Gwalior is a city located in Madhya Pradesh that can be visited for its medieval charm on route to some other more well known destinations of this area. Gwalior has been cherished by tourists for its historic and majestic castles that dot that city and give it a royal charm. Ruled by numerous rulers of North India such as the Tomars, followed by Mughals and Marathas, it was ultimately seized by the Scindias in the 18th century. Gwalior has been prominently called the Fort City due to the numerous well known forts like Man Singh palace, Jai Vilas palace and many others. The city is very popular for the Tansen music celebration that is held here consistently in the month of November and December.

Climate: The climate is extreme, both in summer and winter. The summers are typically exceptionally hot and the winters extremely cool.

Gwalior Fort

Location: 12.5 km from Gwalior Airport & 3.3 km from Gwalior Railway Station

Best month to visit: End October to early March.

Gwalior Fort is an imposing structure that stands atop a plateau, 3 km long. Standing gloriously, it offers an amazing view of Gwalior. The eastern and the western approaches to the fort, both offer their own unique experience with a formidable view on the eastern side and the rock sculptures on the way down on the western side. The celebrated Mughal Emperor Babur called the fort as 'The Pearl in the Necklace of the Forts'. Probably built even earlier than the 10th century, the engineering and architecture of the fort is astounding with some Chinese influence due to the trade between the two nations. The fort houses two main palaces, temples and other structures that add to its majestic looks.

Sun Temple

Location: 8.5 km from Gwalior Airport & 5.2 km from Gwalior Railway Station

Best Time to visit: All days of the week, 6:30 AM - 6:00 PM

(Temple remains closed from 12:00 PM- 01:00 PM)

The Sun Temple, as the name goes is dedicated to the Sun, which is worshipped as a God. A marvel of architecture, the temple is an important place to visit in the city of Gwalior. It was built by the celebrated industrialist G.D. Birla in the year 1988. The temple's inside is made of white marble and the outside is made of red sand stone. Inspired by the Konark Sun temple of Orissa, it is visited by numerous pilgrims and tourists from all parts of the world.

Jai Vilas Palace Museum

Location: 14.6 km from Gwalior Airport & 2.6 km from Gwalior Railway Station

Best month to visit: September to March.

Visiting Timings:  Tue – Sun 10.00 AM - 5.30 PM (Monday Closed)

Jai Vilas Palace is a staggering presentation of the structural glory of the past. The palace worked in European, Italian and Corinthian styles was developed by Maharaja Jayaji Rao Scindia in the year 1875. 35 opulent rooms of the palace have now been converted into a museum. A visit will transport you to the royal era and give you an insight into the royal and majestic lifestyle of the nobles of the times.

Memorial of Tansen

Location: 2.0 km from Gwalior Railway Station

Visiting Hours: 8:00 AM - 6:00 PM

Tansen Memorial originally known as the Tomb of Mohammad Ghaus who was the Guru of Tansen, later became popular as Tansen memorial when Tansen was buried here. Tansen, was one among the nine jewels who enhanced the court of Akbar with their creativity and genius. The memorial is famous for the Tansen music festival that attracts artists from all over the country to give incredible performances.

Tigra Dam

Location: 29.0 km from Gwalior Railway Station, 23.6 km from Bus Stand

Best Month to visit: August to March

Tigra Dam is situated around 23 km from the city. A marvel of engineering, the Tigra dam is tremendous place to visit. You will love seeing transitory winged creatures swimming in the water. This lovely excursion spot is an impeccable place to unwind, go for picnics and boating.
