Three main rivers Periyar, Thalayar and Thodupuzhayar and their tributaries encircle the high ranges and wooded valleys. The river Pamba also has been originated here. As more than a half of the district is covered by forests, nature lovers see it as a dream destination.

Western parts of Idukki have moderate weather with heavy rains. Eastern parts are comparatively colder.
Light weight cotton clothes are preferable. Carry a shawl or a jacket as a precaution if the weather becomes a little cold.

Ranked as Asia’s biggest dam, Idukki dam has river Periyar flowing through Idukki gorge, between the two high massive rocks called Kuravan and Kurathi. This offers a beautiful site of the gigantic Idukki arch dam here. The feel here is majestic and the thought of being downstream seems scary, whereas the drive aloft the dam would be more enjoyable and heartening too. At the base of the dam, there is nothing best to see but the feel.
Idukki Wildlife Sanctuary
Location: Idukki District, Kerala
Timings: Open all the year round. Best season is from December till early March.
How to reach: Easily reachable by road from Kottayam Railway Station, Madurai Airport or Cochin International Airport.

Anayirankal Dam Reservoir
Location: 20 kms from Munnar
Timings: Any time of the year, best during and after monsoons.
How to reach: Easily reachable by road
The panoramic views of the surrounding hills and the valley of the reservoir is something to behold. It is not too crowded like other popular tourist spots in and around Munnar. Your own transportation is a must to reach here. The peaceful reservoir has the facility to enjoy the views and animals through boat riding also.

Timings: Open 7 days from 6 a.m.-1 p.m., 4 p.m.- 8.30 p.m.
