Leh Ladakh

The word Ladakh means ‘The Land of High Passes’, which is an enticing and splendid state of Jammu and Kashmir. The portion of Ladakh in India has Leh and Kargil districts. The Leh District covers more than half the area of Jammu and Kashmir and is the second largest district of India.

Leh- Ladakh is the most angelic, thrilling and adventurous holiday destination of India. It is famous for paramount adventurous activities such as skiing, mountain biking, trekking, river rafting, mountaineering, bike riding, paragliding and many more. Surrounded by the Pakistan and Tibetan Border, this place is also very famous for the rich heritage culture and natural scenic beauty. This is the place where you will find everything which you can expect from a hill station from river, lake, snowfall, mountains, wildlife and greenery. It is one of the most enticing places of India.

Location: It is a state of Jammu and Kashmir, which lies between Karakoram Range in the North and Himalayas in the South.

Climate: Summer season is cool and pleasant and winters are freezing cold in Leh and Ladakh.

In summers, you will be comfortable in loose cotton T-shirts or shirts. But as the temperature varies very quickly, do not forget to keep some woolens also. In winters, you will have to keep yourself warm with heavy woolens, warm jackets, mufflers and woolen caps.

Places of Interest

Leh Palace

Location: About 1.7 kms from Leh, Namgyal Hills, Leh

Timings: Open all days from 7.00 a.m.- 10.00 a.m. and 4.00 p.m.- 6.00 p.m.

Leh Palace is a nine-storey historical monument, which was built in the seventeenth century. The journey to the palace at the top of the Hill is intriguing and amazing and offers a splendid view of Zanskar and Stok Kangri area. Although the Palace is in ruins now, but still you can see the mesmerizing snow –covered mountains around, from its rooftop. There is a museum situated in the palace, where you can see exclusive jewellery, stunning dresses, magnificent ornaments and admirable paintings, which are about 450 years old. You will love the exhibition spaces and the prayer room in the palace.

Above the Palace is the Victory Tower, which was built in the memory of the soldiers of Ladakh. At present, the Palce is used as the Administrative Office of the Archeological Conservation Organization.

Shanti Stupa

Location: 5 kms from Leh, on the hilltop in Chanspa, Leh

Timings: Open all days from 5.00 a.m.- 9.00 p.m.

Shanti Stupa is one of the famous Buddhist monuments in India. It was constructed in 1983 under the supervision of a Japanese Buddhist, Bhikshu Gyomyo Nakamura and a Ladakh Lama from New Delhi, Kushok Bakula. The Japanese and Ladakhi Buddhists provided voluntary help to make the monument. The Prime Minister of India, Indira Gandhi sanctioned to build a road to the Shanti Stupa in 1984. The fourteenth Dalai Lama inaugurated the Stupa in 1991. It is a peaceful and holy palace for Buddhism followers. The structure of Shanti Stupa is a white Dome, which looks very beautiful at night. It is the best place to do meditation and feel the internal happiness.

Pangong Tso

Location: About 175 kms from Leh

Best month to visit: June to September

Pangong Tso Lake is a 100 kms lake, which is the largest saltwater and high altitude lake in Asia. The Lake is also famous by the name of ‘Hollow Lake’. The amazing blue pallet lake is frozen in winters, so you can do ice skating on the top of the frozen water of this lake. During winters every year, an ice skating ‘Gala Festival’ is organized on the frozen lake, which is a big attraction for ice skaters and skiers.

This Lake has become a memorable one, as it was the climax destination of the Bollywood Hindi Movie ‘3 Idiots’. You will have to take permission to visit the lake, as it comes under army control.

Nubra valley

Location: About 150 kms North from Leh

Best month to visit: April to June and September to October

Nubra valley is a desert place surrounded by snow covered mountains. People also call it ‘Desert in the Sky’. It is believed that the original name of Nubra was Ldumra, which means ‘The Valley of Flowers’. It offers a breathtaking view of the Siachen Glacier, in the north side of the valley. Gateway to Nubra Valley, Khardung La Pass, is the highest motorable road in the world. Visitors can also enjoy camel safari, camping and trekking at this beautiful place. There is also a beautiful small lake here, named as Yarab tso Lake. The crystal clear water of this Lake is mind blowing.

Zanskar Valley

Location: About 250 kms off Srinagar-Leh route from Kargil, 105 kms from Leh

Best month to visit: April to August

Zanskar is a wonderful destination located in Kargil district and is one of the remotest places of India. The greatest charm of this Ladhaki-Buddhist valley is to go there, preferably on a trek. You will be mesmerized by the splendid Zanskar River, which flows in the middle of this valley. You can enjoy river rafting in the river, in the summer season. There is also a specified palace in Zanskar, which is clearly mentioned as the ‘End of the Road’.
