Nainital (Uttaranchal)

Kumaon’s largest town, Nainital is situated around a deep lake known as ‘Naini’. According to the legends, Lake Naini is one of the 64 Shakti Peeths, where parts of the burnt body of Sati fell, when Lord Shiva was carrying it. The place where Sati’s eyes fell, came to be known as ‘Nain-Tal’ or ‘Lake of the Eye’. The Lake is in the shape of a pear and is popularly known as the ‘Queen of Lakes’. The hills surrounding the lake are a perfect view for nature lovers and tourists.

There are total seven lakes situated in Nainital, which are called ‘Sattal’. The place is a big source of entertainment with its busy Bazaar, horse riding and boat paddling on the Lake. The South-Eastern end of the lake is called ‘Tallital’ (Lake’s Foot), while the North-Western end is famous as ‘Mallital’ (Lake’s Head). The 1.5 km long Mall Road between the two ends provides an ideal place for exquisite shops, elegant hotels, beautiful restaurants and guest houses.  Nainital is the best place for relaxation and recreation.

Climate: Weather in summers is pleasant and cool, while winters are chilling cold

You can wear light clothes in summers, but you should carry some woolens also as the weather can change any time. Winters require heavy woolen clothes.

By Train: Nearest railheads are Kathgodam (35 kms) and Haldwani (40 kms)

Naina Peak

Location: 6 kms from Nainital, 10 kms from Tallital Bus Stand

Best month to visit: April-October from Sunrise to Sunset

Naina Peak is the highest peak of Nainital and is also known as ‘China Peak’ and ‘Cheena Peak’. It offers a splendid view of the beautiful Nainital, gigantic Himalayas and the vast Kumaon region. It is believed that the Hindu Lord Shiva performed Tandav Dance here. You will be enchanted by this place if you are fond of trekking. The scenic natural beauty will refresh your mind and soul.

Tiffin Top

Location: 4 kms from Nainital

Best month to visit: March to June, September and October

Popular as a picnic spot in Nainital, Tiffin Top is also known as ‘Dorothy’s Seat’. It is a stonework bench, built in the memory of an English artist, Dorothy Kellet, by her well wishers and her husband. This place is a big attraction for photographers and painters to capture the exotic beauty of the place. You will feel relaxed and refreshed from the hustle and bustle of your lives.

Naina Devi Temple

Location: It is located on top of the Naini Hill, at the Northern side of Naini Lake, about 1.8 kms from the Mall Road of Nainital

Timings: Open all days from 6.00 a.m.- 9.00 p.m.

Naina Devi temple is a very prominent religious place for Hindus. It is one of the Shakti Peethas  dedicated to Goddess Sati, the wife of Lord Shiva. The exotic Temple was built in the eighth century by Raja Bir Chand. This beautiful temple is situated at the bank of Naini Lake. You can enjoy a wonderful view of the Naini Lake from the temple. The most attractive aspect of this Temple is that you will enjoy all major festivals of Hindu mythology with great pomp and pleasure.

Nainital Lake

Location: 900 meters from Mall Road

Best month to visit: February to November

Located exactly in the heart of Nainital, the mesmerizing Nainital Lake is a major tourist attraction of Nainital. It is also known as ‘Naini Lake’. This beautiful lake is a natural fresh-water lake, which stretches over the area of 3.5 kms. You will be astounded to see the impressions of the blend of red, maroon and vermilion colors of the sky on the water of the lake, during Sunrise and Sunset. The majestic view of the town on the Southern side of the lake is mind blowing.

The experience of boating in this lake is awesome and unforgettable. You can also take a walk on the pathway around the lake and enjoy the peaceful atmosphere.  

Mall Road

Location: In the centre of Nainital

Best month to visit:  April to June, September and October

Now named as ‘Govind Ballabh Pant Marg’, Mall road is a one km. road, which runs parallel to the lake. It connects the two ends of Nainital and serves as its entry and exit point. The most significant aspect of Mall Road is that you can enjoy the beautiful view of the lake at one side, as well as relish several shops at the other side. If you are fond of eating and shopping, you will be intrigued by the number of vendors and shops offering woolen clothes, handicrafts, jewelry, food stuff and many more items.

You can enjoy the cool breeze and the charm of the place, while taking a stroll on the Mall Road comfortably because the entry of vehicles on the Mall Road is restricted. A single road of 1 km. is a complete package of natural beauty and fun.
