Rameshwaram (Tamil Nadu)

Among the Char Dhams, Rameshwaram is one of significant Dham of Hindus. In Sanskrit, the word ‘Rameswara’ means ‘Lord of Rama’. According to the Hindu epic ‘Ramayana’, Lord Rama prayed to Lord Shiva for forgiveness of his sins, which he might have committed during his war with the demon-king Ravana. It is said that Lord Rama built a bridge to Lanka across the sea to rescue his wife Sita from Ravana.

It is a divine place having a number of ancient sanctuaries. Numerous devotees rush to Rameshwarm every year to pray and take blessings from their deities. There are many sacred places here, which attract tourists from all over the world. According to Hindu mythology, Rameshwarm has very rich historical and cultural values.

Location: It is located on Pamban Island, about 50 kms from Mannar Island, Sri Lanka

Climate: Smmers are very hot and dry, while winters are mild cold in Rameshwarm.

You will prefer very light cotton clothes in summers. You will feel warm with light woolens or a shawl in winters.

Best time to visit: October-April

Sri Ramanathaswamy Temple

Location: Rameshwaram, Tamil Nadu

Timings: Open all days from 5.00 a.m.- 12.00 p.m. and 6.00 p.m.- 8.45 p.m.

Sri Ramanathaswamy Temple is the most prominent and ancient sanctuary of Rameshwarm. It has second-largest pillared corridor all over the world. The Temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva. You can see a Jyotirlinga here, which was made through stone, salt, sand and other elements. As per the holy books of Hindus, this is the exact place where lord Rama worshiped Lord Shiva. This beautiful temple was constructed in Dravidian architectural style. It is believed that initially, there were approximately 112 ponds present in the temple, from which only 12 remain now.

Kothandaramaswamy Temple

Location: 12 kms from Rameshwarm

Timings: Open all days from 6.00 a.m.- 7.00 p.m.

Kothandaramaswamy Temple is an ancient Temple, which was built around 500 years ago in Dhanushkodi. Foot prints of Lord Rama can be seen in this temple. It is believed that at this place, Lord Rama had performed ‘Pattabhishekam Ceremony’ for Vibhishana. You can see the idols of lord Rama, Sita, Lakshman, Hanuman and Vibhishana inside the temple. There are beautiful paintings on the walls of the Temple which depict the story of Ramayana. You can also see the oldest tree ‘Athi Maram’ and a temple tank, which was named after Bhringi Rishi inside the temple.

It is better that you visit the temple early morning, as it gets very crowded later. You can stay in the rooms available in the temple.

Agni Tirtham

Location: 1.2 kms from Rameshwarm, about 100 meters from Ramanathaswamy Temple

Timings: Open all days from 5:00 a.m. - 6:00 p.m.

Agni Tirtham is a significant pilgrim of Hindus. According to Hindu mythology, Goddess Sita gave the ‘Agni- Pariksha’ at this place. Sita had walked and passed through the fire here, without getting hurt. It is also believed that Lord Rama took bath in the sacred water of the ocean here and offered his prayers to Lord Shiva, after killing the Demon Ravana. It is said that the people who take a dip in the water of the ocean here, would get rid from their sins.

Adam’s Bridge

Location: 35.9 kms from Rameshwarm

Best month to visit: November to march

Adam’s Bridge also known as ‘Ram- Setu’, is a chain of sandbanks, rocks and coral reefs and it connects Rameshwaram and Sri Lanka. The most fascinating thing about this bridge is that the stones of this bridge are floating on the ocean. It is believed that the bridge was constructed by Lord Rama, to rescue his wife Sita from Ravana, with the help of Hanuman and his monkey Sena.

This ancient bridge is 48 kms long and it separates the Gulf of Munnar from the Palk Strait

Ariyaman Beach

Location: 27 kms from the city centre

Best month to visit: October to march

Ariyaman beach is the perfect place to relax and enjoy the beauty of the seashore. This beach is 2 kms long and 150 meters wide. The beautiful white sand and crystal clear water of this beach is mind blowing. You can also enjoy many recreational activities here like wind surfing, water scooter ride and boating at the beach. A children park, along with a museum and an aquarium situated near the beach is intriguing. The most famous activity at the beach is parasailing. The parachute is controlled by a moving boat and being almost 200 meters above the sea level with the parachute is an amazing experience.
