Earlier named as “Ka Kshaid Lai Pateng Khohsiew” given by the Khasi people which means ‘Three Steps Water Falls’, Elephant Falls is a combination of three rivers. The name ‘Elephant Falls’ was given by the British regime because the rock from where the water used to fall down resembled an elephant. Later, this rock was destroyed in a strong earthquake. Famous as one of the Natural Wonders of North-East India, Elephant Falls is a major attraction for a lot of tourists, nature lovers and photographers. The waterfall is in three steps- Broad, Tamed and Tallest. It is surrounded by elegant green trees, which add to its beauty.
Shillong Catholic Cathedral Cruch
Location: 2.3 kms from Shillong
Timings: All days of the week except Sunday from 7.00 a.m.- 6.30 p.m., Sunday timings: 8.00 a.m.- 6.30 p.m
This is the most ancient church built in 1913 by the Germans and is about 50 years old. The Church is also known as ‘Cathedral of Mary Help of Christians’. You will be fascinated by the architecture of the Church, as it is built in Gothic Architectural Style.
This church is earthquake resistant as it is made on sand rather than rock, which makes it unique from other churches. The walls of the church tell about the life stories of various saints and exquisite scenes from the Holy Scriptures.
Spread Eagle Falls
Location: About 6 kms from the city, 3 kms from the Polo Ground
Timings: Open all days from 10.00 a.m.- 6.00 p.m.
This widest waterfall is also locally known by the name of ‘Sati Falls’ or ‘Umkaliar Falls’. This fall got its name ‘Spread Eagle Falls’ because it looks like an Eagle which has its wings spread wide. The waterfall forms a small pool of water after descending from an irregular rocky path.
This fall forms an astounding picturesque place of natural beauty, with the beautiful thick forestation surrounding it. It is one of the most visited picnic spot by tourists and locals.
Lady Hydari Park
Location: 2.7 kms from the city
Timings: Open all days of the week from 9.00 a.m.- 8.00 p.m.
This park is named after the wife of the Governor of Assam. The mini zoo, with 73 species of birds and more than 100 reptiles, is governed by the State Forest Department and is a source of amusement for the kids, in the park. It also has a special play area, which your children will love. A magnificent Museum is also a part of the park that highlights the state’s biodiversity. The major highlight of the park is the elegant and appealing bed of radiant roses.
Wankhar Entomology Museum
Location: 2.8 kms from the city, 5 kms from Police Bazar Bus Stand
Timings: Open on Monday to Friday from 10:00 a.m. - 4:30 p.m., on Saturday from 10:30 a.m. - 1:00 p.m. Sunday closed.
Also known as ‘Butterfly Museum’, this exquisite Museum was made by the Wankhar family in 1930. This museum has a vast collection of different species of butterflies, moths, rhinoceros beetles and stick insects of different patterns and colours. This museum has a collection of around 1600 species of butterflies and moths from all over the World.
Rare species of the butterfly are also found here. This is the only Museum in India, which is totally devoted to butterflies and moths. The Museum also provides a Breeding Program to conserve the rare moth and butterfly species.
